Bicycle and pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries are on the increase across the nation, and Newburyport and neighboring communities are not immune from this trend. There is a need to address the systemic safety issues on our streets.
In order to help raise awareness and spur conversation about street safety, Newburyport Livable Streets and the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (MVPC) hosted a screening of The Street Project, a documentary film that highlights the global, citizen-led fight to make our streets safer.

The Street Project takes a deep dive into how Americans view our streets and how we can make them safer. The film looks at how we got here, including the history of street use and how it has changed, what makes effective street design, the impact of zoning laws on street transportation, and much more. The film includes interviews with a diverse array of experts including street historian Peter Norton, city planner Jeff Speck, and urban design expert Mikael Colville-Andersen as well as citizens active in their communities.

MVPC participated in this event as part of MV Vision Zero, a regional safety action plan for the 15 cities and towns in the lower Merrimack Valley. The plan is called “MV Vision Zero” because its goal is to achieve zero roadway deaths and serious injuries in the Merrimack Valley. This regional planning effort will combine transportation planning expertise with insights from local residents.
The Street Project was shown at The Screening Room on Sunday, November 12, 2023, and was followed by a brief presentation about MV Vision Zero and an opportunity to discuss local safety issues and concerns. Join us to see how communities are addressing their local safety issues, and to share your ideas with local leaders and regional transportation planners.
